What 8 Years of Personal Training Has Taught Me

I’ve had the good fortune of meeting and training hundreds of people in these last 8 years.

Between working in a commercial gym, doing in-home training sessions and owning a gym for a few years, I’ve helped a lot of people.

Each person comes with their own lessons, and I’m grateful for all of these experiences.

They have shaped me and my perspective both professionally and on a personal level, which makes me want to share them with you.

You can’t make someone want it.

Early in my career I would get frustrated by the fact that I’d be giving my all to someone only for them to not follow through.

I’ve come to learn and accept that you cannot make someone want it, you can only help someone as much as they want to be helped.

This is such an important lesson to learn in and outside of fitness.

Because often times, pushing someone to do something - no matter how beneficial it is - can push them further away from doing it.

Find people who genuinely want what you are offering and give them your all.

There are no shortcuts.

People get impatient.

They want what they want… now.

But shortcuts often lead to setbacks.

Many clients have tried to cheat the system with sub 1,000 calorie diets only to shock their body into maintaining or gaining weight.

Because once your deficit is too low, your body thinks it’s starving.

So it holds on to every calorie, anticipating that it will never see another calorie again.

On the contrary…

I’ve programmed specific weight ranges and training volumes for people only to find that they got overly ambitious and injured themselves.

Because your first set is nowhere near the same as the intensity of your third set - and sometimes less is more.

Don’t try to cheat the system, because eventually it will try to cheat you.

Make sustainable changes that you can keep doing long term to reap real benefits that last.

You have to do things you don’t want to do to get what you want.

“I want to squat with a barbell on my back”

“I want to live a pain-free life”

“I want to get the body of my dreams…”

“But I don’t want to do that thing.”

There’s always going to be that thing that people don’t want to do.

Even though they know that’s their largest barrier to success.

Whether it’s focusing on your stretching routine to hit depth in a squat, slowing the tempo down so you feel the right muscles or eating right…

We all have to do things we don’t want to do to get what we want.

Get out of your own way and start training your mind to do that thing more often so you can see the results you want.

In conclusion…

Life’s not going to be a walk in the park all the time.

You’re going to have to do things that you don’t want to do to reach your goals.

The long road albeit tedious and difficult is often the best road for long-term results.

And nobody can make you want it, but you can use someone like me to fuel your motivation and reach your goals as quick as possible.
