Why I Almost Quit Working Out

There’s a reason only 20% of the population have an active gym membership.

It’s hard physical and mental work.

In order to gain any significant results you need to be consistent with a solid plan for months, if not years.

And it’s easy to get sucked into fitness trends on social media that make you feel like you’re not doing enough.

I feel your pain.

I consider myself to have about average genetics, leaving the results I want rather difficult to achieve.

I’ve spent over 12 years working on my own goals while professionally helping people do the same for over 8 years.

And the truth of the matter is, most people who get really into fitness on their own will likely have above average genetics that allow them to see results in an expedited timeline.

While the rest of us are left to wonder, “will I ever get there?” as their gym partner drags them along to the gym to watch their new PR.

You’ll get there in your own way.

Because you are your only competition.

Don’t forget that… it’s more important than you’ll ever know.

I used to get frustrated comparing myself to all my peers in the gym.

I was the small kid who struggled to push weight, and struggled even more to gain weight.

People would always tell me I need to eat more without knowing that I was eating twice their daily calorie intake.

Because let’s face it, most people won’t understand the struggle you’re going through.

It’s more complicated than it seems.

Some people have a predisposition to gain body fat quicker than others, which some have the opposite predisposition.

There have been multiple studies done proving that one size does not fit all.

One great example is “The Effects of Overfeeding on Body Composition” where there are multiple cited studies showing that genetics play a role in body composition change.

In a nutshell, 12 people were overfed by 1,000 kcal for 22 days, and the findings were interesting.

The average person gained 4.8lbs with 50% of it being fat mass, whereas some of the individuals actually lost body fat.

We are all built different.

So don’t knock yourself down and tell yourself that you can’t do it.

We all have different timelines for our progress.

And all of our journeys are going to look a lot different than each others’.

What’s kept me going is knowing that every year I will get a little better than the last and be able to live a long and healthy life because of it.

Hopefully hearing this helps so that you don’t give up and see that you can reach your goals.

It just may take more time than the next person.
